Karelia participated in GRID Alternatives International Program's first Women in Solar installation in El Guaylo, Nicaragua in January 2015. She graduated with a degree in Renewable Energy Engineering from UNAN (Autonomous University of Nicaragua). During college, she focused most of her research and practice on solar energy, specifically in thermal and PV. Last year she formulated a project to bring solar energy to a small impoverished community in Esteli, Nicaragua and her proposal was selected so she received a scholarship to travel to Bielefeld (University of Applied Science) in Germany for three months. Karelia has a passion for working in rural communities to support community development and environmental protection by using clean energy.
