We had so much to celebrate and be thankful for at our annual Interconnection 2016 fundraiser held in San Francisco on June 2. We were grateful to have Interconnection 2016 honorees California Senate Pro Tem Kevin de León and Paul Nahi, CEO of Enphase Energy, there in person to be recognized for their continued and essential support of our work to make solar accessible to all families (check out their honoree videos below!)
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the evening for many was listening to the personal experience of Wyatt Atkinson, a Navy Veteran and Assiniboine and Sioux tribal member who is completing a year of service with GRID Alternatives in Northern California.
“When I found out about GRID’s SolarCorps Fellowships, it was like the universe came into alignment and placed a stepping stone to my dream right in front of me: the chance for a meaningful job after college that would give me the skills I would need to help make my reservation energy independent,” Atkinson shared. He plans to return home to Montana after his SolarCorps Fellowship and help families on his reservation go solar.
While it was certainly a night of fun, with face painting, cotton candy making and a photo booth to capture all the silly moments, it was also a night to reflect on energy issues facing our most disadvantaged communities. Senator de León, who has been a leader in advancing California’s policies to ensure equitable access to clean energy, spoke to this at the event.
“We need to make sure all individuals, irrespective of their socioeconomic status, have an opportunity to participate in carbon reduction,” said de León. “We need to make sure that we democratize our climate change policies. That’s what GRID Alternatives is all about.”
Thank you to everyone who came to support our work, and a special thank you to Interconnection 2016 sponsors Enphase Energy, SunEdison, Sunrun, Wells Fargo, Fish & Richardson, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, Pacific Gas & Electric Co, Winston & Strawn and many more.
