A handful of University of Colorado students headed to Denver last week to gain some hands on experience installing solar panels in a Habitat for Humanity community. California-based non-profit GRID Alternatives spent the week installing 12 solar energy systems on homes in the Lakewood community as part of a pilot program testing the company's plans to expand to Colorado.

A nonprofit is working to install solar panels on 12 Habitat for Humanity homes in Denver this week. The organization, GRID Alternatives, says it can save these low-income homeowners about $75 a month.

Lakewood, Colorado is set to be the first community outside of California to benefit from a venture that has already brought solar power to more than 2,400 low-income families in California with projected energy cost savings of more than $66 million.
