NRG Energy partners with GRID Alternatives to install solar, provide savings for San Diego homeowner.

Twenty-four employee volunteers from NRG spread out on rooftops across California last week to lend their #NRGPeoplePower installing solar for low-income families with us as part of the company’s annual Global Giving Week.

Mr. Dominguez says that when he and his wife, Carmen got more AC units to cope with the heat, their electric bill jumped to $300 a month. “I just didn’t know what to do, I couldn’t believe it,” he says.

“One of the construction team installing my solar system mentioned that there are workforce opportunities for veterans,” he says. “I’m going to apply, I’d love to be a part of the team.”

Jennifer White is here to help. The UCLA Graduate has master’s degrees in both Public Policy and Education, she is self disciplined, highly motivated and is currently channeling her significant energies into her position as a GRID Alternatives Outreach Fellow.

It took four years of convincing, but finally Brenda Chambers is going solar.

“We’re very conservative with energy, so our bills weren’t as high as some others,” says Jan Carpenter Tucker, “but we really wanted solar, because it seems like the right thing to do.”

For many students in America, Spring Break is a time for revelry and abandon. This year 27 students from University of Michigan and Arizona State University bucked this trend and instead chose to spend their week of vacation bringing solar power to six Native American families.

It was during a college class that Ms. Gonzales heard her fellow students talking about an all women crew volunteering with GRID Alternatives San Diego. “All I heard was ‘job’, ‘crew’ and ‘tools’, and I thought, I could do that!”
