US Congressman Mark Takano (41st District) joined GRID homeowner Michelle Marquez to shine a spotlight on expanded solar opportunities for Inland Empire homeowners and job trainees. During the June 28, 2016 special event, the focus was on funding available for a limited time to families in disadvantaged communities. Qualified homeowners can reduce their electric bills through a solar system installed by job trainees and funded through the cap-and-trade program as part of California’s Climate Investments. GRID’s funding from the California Department of Community Services and Development will continue to support projects such as Michelle’s through mid-2018.
“Developing a robust renewable energy industry in the Inland Empire creates jobs, protects the environment, and builds a more secure future for the next generation,” said Representative Takano. “I’m proud of the work being done in Riverside to support low-income families and train workers for successful careers. This program demonstrates what is possible when we commit ourselves to strengthening our communities.”
GRID installed the 17-panel, 5.6 kW system with the assistance of job trainees participating in a four month paid solar internship program. Stephen Dasaro of Riverside is one of the interns who participated in the installation. Before he was selected in the program, Stephen volunteered with GRID, installing solar on five homes. “I really wanted a job in sustainable energy, but had zero experience,” Stephen said. “My brother told me about GRID’s training program and I thought it was too good to be true. Once I showed up for an installation, I knew GRID was the real deal. I have already learned so much and I can’t wait to learn more about system design. GRID is a great way to get into the solar industry.”
Michelle was impressed with the level of training and professionalism of the construction team. “Before the system was installed on my house I stopped by the GRID office and watched one of the construction classes,” she said. “I could see the level of emphasis GRID places on both quality and safety. It was clear once the job was complete that their Solar Installation Supervisors really understand solar completely. I recommend GRID to anyone interested in solar!”
Do you know someone who would benefit from a GRID solar system? The summer months are heating up leading to high energy bills.
