The students from University of Massachusetts Boston kicked off their Monday morning with a two-hour volunteer orientation at the GRID Tri-State office with an introdution to GRID Alternatives, the solar industry, installation process, and on-site safety practices.
Later that day, the students put on their safety vests and tool belts, and worked with GRID Tri-State’s construction team in the warehouse on various prep work and pre-installation tasks.
For two days, the students got their hands dirty and helped on the solar installation for low-income home owners in Far Rockaway, a vibrant beach community in Queens, where they gained some valuable hands-on experience under the sun.
On Thursday, the students visited the Solar Roof Pod at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, in the City College of New York.
