On April 18th and 19th Cal Poly’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) joined GRID Alternatives Central Coast to install solar for two low-income families residing in King City. These were the 4th and 5th installs for SHPE during the last two years. Over the weekend, SHPE students installed 4.34 Kilowatts of capacity, adding to a total of 9.84 Kilowatts installed by SHPE Students so far! These solar systems will provide significant environmental impacts by offsetting 257 tons of greenhouse gasses, the equivalent of taking 46 cars off the road for a year! The combined result of the five projects that SHPE has worked on will translate to over $83,000 in client savings on monthly energy bills over the lifetime of these systems. We absolutely appreciate these hard working Cal Poly students for donating 176 hours (the weekend before final exams!) to help low-income families in the area access renewable energy.
Also, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is currently fundraising to contribute towards the cost of these solar system installations with GRID Alternatives Central Coast. Please visit their First Giving site HERE and help them reach their goal of raising $2,500 and helping GRID Alternatives further our mission to make renewable energy technology and job training accessible to underserved communities.
