Santa’s Solar Fest Brings Holiday Cheer and Clean Energy to Sun Valley

In true GRID Alternatives Greater Los Angeles (GRID GLA) fashion, we wrapped up 2024 with a festive twist on community outreach. Santa’s Solar Fest, held on Saturday, December 7 at Alliance MIT 6-12 Complex in Sun Valley, brought the community together for a day that blended holiday magic with clean energy education.

By turning a traditional family celebration into a joyful platform for solar awareness, GRID GLA continued its mission of making renewable energy more accessible to the families who need it most.

With music in the air, cookie frosting in full swing, and Santa posing for photos with excited children and families, the event delivered holiday cheer and community connection in equal measure. Families enjoyed fun activities, free snacks, and the opportunity to engage with our team and partner organizations. More than just a holiday celebration, Santa’s Solar Fest was a chance to share critical information about no-cost, state-funded solar programs available to income-qualified homeowners—before this unique funding opportunity ends.

“This isn’t just a holiday event, it’s a reflection of what we stand for, we’re here to celebrate with food, fun, and community but more importantly, to share knowledge and resources that truly empower. Our free Solar Program is publicly funded, not profit-driven, and built with you in mind. That’s what makes our work different. That’s why we show up.”

Ruben Montoya, Outreach Coordinator at GRID GLA

A Day of Holiday Magic (and Solar Knowledge)

More than 150 residents attended the event, enjoying holiday-themed activities like cookie decorating, letters to Santa, and DIY crafts for kids. Families posed for professional portraits with Santa against a cheerful backdrop, and everyone left with a 4x6 photo print (plus digital copies to share with loved ones).

In between candy canes and crafts, GRID staff were on hand to share how state programs can help residents lower their electricity bills through rooftop solar at no cost to qualifying households. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, check eligibility, and even sign up on the spot.

“This is what outreach looks like when it’s rooted in the community, it’s warm, it’s welcoming, and it meets people where they’re at—in this case, over cocoa and crafts.”

Closing the Year with Purpose

As 2024 came to a close, Santa’s Solar Fest reminded us that outreach doesn’t have to look one way. With a little creativity and a lot of heart, it’s possible to make real connections, share vital information, and spread joy all at once.

“This event showed how powerful it is when climate action and community joy go hand-in-hand, we were able to reach new families, educate them on solar opportunities, and celebrate the season in a way that was accessible, inclusive, and fun.”

Ashley Christy, Executive Director of GRID GLA

We’re grateful to everyone who attended and helped make this event a success. And to all the new families we met: we look forward to walking with you toward a more sustainable, affordable energy future in 2025.
