Marine veteran Eric Plowman is one of GRID IE’s newest SolarCorps Construction Fellows. He brings to GRID a technical skillset of aviation operations including air traffic control experience. Eric also brings the discipline required for special duty Marine assignments in locations such as U.S. Embassies in China, Mexico and Slovakia.
After his discharge, Eric developed an interest in electrical job opportunities and began taking classes at a local community college. He soon learned about GRID and the hands-on training working with photovoltaic systems. “As a job trainee, GRID gave me a chance to learn at my own pace,” Eric said. “The Solar Installation Supervisors always provided a positive learning environment while at the same time focusing on the importance of safety since we constantly work on roofs and around electricity.“
Eric soon realized the value of GRID’s free job training program. From January to June 2016 Eric amassed 272 volunteer hours and completed the Team Leader Program, certified for both ground and roof. “GRID offers a unique opportunity as a job trainee,” he said. “It is the one job training experience where you can see the results, face-to-face with the families you help. What a confidence builder!”
Another key aspect of GRID’s training program caught Eric’s attention. “GRID really ties teamwork to leadership,” he said. “My experience in the Marines taught me to take the initiative and perform. Equally important is the ability to teach others what you know in order to build a strong team. GRID definitely has that covered as the Solar Installation Supervisors encourage everyone and brings out their best effort.”
