In 2023, GRID IE’s Workforce Team trained over 340 community members through paid internships, Solar Futures, virtual training, and IBT 200.
Since the launch of GRID IE's Clean Tech Training Center (CTTC) in 2022, our Workforce Team has redefined how the Inland Empire is included in a growing, clean energy economy that benefits all.
In 200 hours, our IBT 200 students complete a full-time, 5-week course covering the complete installation of photovoltaic systems in the classroom and working alongside our professional Construction Team in the field. Its extensive syllabus includes learning objectives such as OSHA 10, CPR/First Aid, construction and electricity basics, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance, and employment readiness.
If you’re a long-time IBT 200 enthusiast, you’ve met our first graduates and the challenges they overcame during the program. Let’s meet our current cohort of solar scholars—including their advice, reflections, and goals!
Ty/Tyreck/Reek
“I have learned how helpful I can be—I noticed I am good at relaying information in a way others can understand. We are encouraged to help each other out!” shares Ty. Post IBT 200, Ty hopes to utilize their skills to begin a career in commercial work.
Gregory
Having discovered GRID’s IBT 200 program through the Center for Employment Opportunities, Greg’s advice to anyone interested in pursuing more is: “Understand that your future is in your hands. No-one can stop you, but YOU.”
Lisa and Dani, IBT 200 trainees who were part of the construction team installing a solar system during the Solar Celebration in Ontario.
Lisa (She/her)
Throughout IBT 200’s intense curriculum, Lisa learned something new about herself: “I am capable of learning new skills in an environment unfamiliar to me.” She also sees the positive impact of her hard work reflected in her personal life.
Angel O. (He/him)
Angel came across IBT 200 during his pursuit for construction and OSHA 10 training. In his case, it’s important to “Not be afraid of failure. Persistence and a learning attitude are key. GRID wants you to succeed,” he said.
Jorge (He/him)
“I plan on pursuing a career as an entry level solar installer,” shares Jorge, whose goal is to learn the latest solar technologies through the IBT 200 classroom and hands-on lab activities.
Daveion (He/him)
“Everyday has been a fun learning experience,” says Daveion, who was recommended IBT 200 by the Center for Employment Opportunities. “I am proud that I put myself out there and try something new.”
Joaly, IBT 200 trainee who was part of the construction team installing a solar system during the Solar Celebration in Ontario.
Joaly (She/her)
Since hearing about GRID IE's IBT 200 program from a family member, Joaly has “been able to pick up a ton of skills in a short time frame and install solar.” She gives a huge thanks to the Workforce and Construction staff!
Jesus (He/him)
“I wanted to take my first step in a trade, and GRID IE gave me an opportunity to learn and experience solar,” shares Jesus. “We learn for free, earn money for completion, and get a solar certificate—my plan is to find a good job and build a career from it.”
Angel R. (He/him)
After hearing about IBT 200 from a staff member at GRID IE, Angel was anxious to have a shot at a great opportunity: “I applied to the program because I am interested in the field of solar installation. I believe that with the experience I gain from the program, I will be able to enter other fields of work like becoming an electrician.”
Our cohort recently completed their training, which included a final written exam and a showcase of their skills to potential employers!
This cohort's graduation ceremony will be covered in the next edition of the newsletter.
