A volunteer's journey to creating a more sustainable environment

Cory Kerns has volunteered over 150 hours with GRID CO since May of 2019. He is a committed volunteer who camped for weeks to help build the 1.2MW DC solar garden for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe in Towaoc, Colorado. He spent a month working on the beautiful solar project and was very proud of how the project turned out. At that time, Cory was interested in getting out of his home town of Durango to do more solar installations and participate in bigger projects to create a more sustainable energy grid within Colorado. It was at the Ute Mountain Ute install that he first heard of the Solar Training Academy (STA), and he drove 7 hours to enroll and participate in the program.

His time in STA was the next step in becoming a professional solar installer, which was his dream come true. Cory said, “STA is amazing for what it is. They give hands-on training while teaching the basics of photovoltaic systems, and working days on actual install sites.” He was super excited to be a part of the solar industry because he did not feel secure in the future of the planet's energy consumption. Cory was able to meet with various employers while in Denver. Auric Energy was the company that stood out to him the most. He was hired with Auric Energy immediately after completing the STA!

Cory is now working with other fellow STA graduates at Auric Energy. He says, “I cannot thank GRID CO enough for the work that they do and will hold the company to the highest regard.” He is thrilled to be working in Denver connected to so many organizations helping to change the planet for the better!
