Pilot battery storage program launched in Pomona, CA

With 17 years of experience installing solar for families who qualify for grant-funded free solar, nonprofit organization GRID Alternatives Greater Los Angeles (GRID GLA) is marking a significant step toward energy resilience in Southern California by introducing battery storage to accompany solar installations.

A Pomona homeowner is the first to benefit, receiving a 5.135 kW solar system, plus battery storage. Having battery storage in addition to solar power will allow the homeowner to store excess solar power, leading to lower energy bills and less dependence on the grid during peak times or outages.

During California's wildfire season and heat waves, battery storage offers a safeguard, providing backup power when residents need it most. California ranks among the top states reporting weather-related outages in the last 2 decades, with Los Angeles ranking highest in blackouts amongst large California cities.

The pilot program, supported by state funding, reflects California’s commitment to expanding access to clean, reliable energy for all.

“Rates in California have changed, where it’s the most expensive to use your electricity in the evening. However, your solar system produces power in the middle of the day. So having a storage system allows you to save all that power that you make during the day, and use it during the evenings in the most expensive times.”

Anna Bautista, Vice President of Construction, GRID Alternatives

Power outages can disproportionately impact vulnerable populations. Older adults or people dependent on medical equipment are at risk during blackouts. Underserved communities often experience longer power outage durations due to factors like infrastructure disparities and slower restoration efforts.

Another benefit of solar plus battery will be that during a blackout, you have energy storage in your battery. So all you have to do is drain that power, and have energy for your medical equipment, for your fridge, or for your internet.”

This installation sets the stage for more households to harness renewable energy and reduce dependency on fossil fuels while gaining protection against power outages, and maximizing utility bill savings.

This pilot program aligns with GRID’s commitment to innovative solutions that empower communities and promote environmental sustainability.
