Solar Showcase Marks First Coachella Prospera Installation in Coachella

The first rooftop solar system signals the start of the program in Coachella

GRID Alternatives Southern California joined the City of Coachella and local residents to celebrate a milestone for clean energy access in the Coachella Valley. On January 13, community members gathered on Calle Pino for a Solar Showcase marking the first completed solar installation through the Coachella ProsperaTransformative Climate Communities initiative.

The installation took place at the Saldana family's home and marks the beginning of a multi-year investment in clean energy, workforce opportunities, and neighborhood resilience in Coachella. Made possible through funding from California’s Transformative Climate Communities Program, Coachella Prospera brings together residents, nonprofit partners, local businesses, and public agencies to invest in projects that improve health, reduce pollution, and expand economic opportunity in neighborhoods that have long faced environmental and economic challenges.

The Saldana home received a 4.8-kilowatt rooftop solar system installed at no cost through the program. Over the lifetime of the system, the installation is expected to save the household approximately $11,500 in electricity costs while generating clean power for decades to come. The environmental impact is significant as well, with an estimated 32.5 tons of carbon emissions avoided over the life of the system, equivalent to taking six cars off the road or planting 757 trees.

City leaders opened the Solar Showcase by speaking about the community vision behind Coachella Prosperaand the importance of partnerships in delivering projects that benefit local residents. Mayor Pro Tem Denise Delgado and Councilmembers Yadira Perez, Dr. Frank Figueroa, and Stephanie Virgen attended the event and spoke about the City’s commitment to investments that improve public health, expand economic opportunity, and bring climate solutions directly to Coachella neighborhoods.

Representatives from project partners also addressed the gathering and highlighted the collaboration behind the project. From GRID Alternatives Southern California, Director of Outreach Yoselyn Eckert, Senior Outreach Coordinator Alexandra Guillen Garcia, Workforce Training Manager Sandra Romero, and Solar Installation Supervisor Javier Pratts shared how GRID is working alongside the City of Coachella and other partners to deliver clean energy access and workforce opportunities through the Coachella Prospera initiative.

Coachella Prospera was shaped through an extensive community planning process led by the City of Coachella’s Economic Development Department. Residents participated in workshops and meetings to identify projects that would bring meaningful climate investments to their neighborhoods. That process led to the city securing 22 million dollars from the California Strategic Growth Council to fund projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while delivering direct benefits to local households.

Solar installations are one part of a broader vision for the neighborhood that includes transportation improvements, urban forestry, housing investments, and expanded community resources. Together, these projects are designed to strengthen community health and resilience while supporting the transition to a clean energy economy.

Through the Coachella Prospera solar program, GRID Alternatives Southern California will install solar systems on approximately 75 income-qualified homes in the project area over the next three years, totaling about 315 kilowatts of solar capacity. The program will also create pathways into the clean energy workforce. Participants in Installation Basics Training will gain hands-on experience working alongside GRID installation teams, SolarCorps Fellows will support program delivery through an 11-month service experience, and local youth will have access to solar education through the Solar Futures program.

For the Saldana family and their neighbors, the Solar Showcase on Calle Pino marked the beginning of that work. The installation was not only a milestone for the community but also drew attention from regional media, with reporters from News Channel 3NBC Palm Springs, and Telemundo Palm Springs on-site to document the moment and speak with partners about the impact of the Coachella Prospera initiative. As the first solar system installed through the program begins generating clean energy for the household, it stands as an early example of what community-led climate investment can look like, bringing lower energy costs, cleaner air, and new opportunities to the families who call Coachella home.
