On Wednesday September 24, volunteers from SunEdison and Homeboy Industries came together to install 2.4 kilowatts of solar on the Gonzalez’ family home. The system is expected to create over $20,000 in savings for the family over the system’s lifetime.
The Gonzalez family, who received their home from Habitat for Humanity, are very thankful for their solar electric system. While the volunteer crew got the panels up on the roof, Mrs. Gonzalez showed her appreciation to the volunteers by preparing them a fresh, home-cooked lunch.
This is the second time SunEdison and Homeboy Industries come together to install solar with GRID. Both SunEdison and Homeboy Industries are long-time GRID partners who are 100% behind our workforce development efforts -- it is always exciting to have our partners working together.
Homeboy volunteers have participated on more than 4 installs this year. GRID’s solar projects are a great way for Homeboy Industries to continue training and supporting formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women as they redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community.
SunEdison has partnered with GRID Alternatives since 2013, and earlier this year they made a major philanthropic and equipment donation to support our National Women in Solar Initiative. Its employees have already participated in a few installations in the Los Angeles Area.
We would like to thank all the volunteers that worked on this project and specifically Ravi Sankaran, GLA’s newest board member, for making this installation happen. Of course we also can’t forget about Mrs. Gonzalez deliciously prepared birria -- Thank you!
