Energy Savings for Desert Hot Springs Veteran

United States Army Veteran Larry Hiner was born in Ohio and moved to California in 1965 where he was stationed in Van Nuys, California. He resided in the San Fernando Valley for 52 years prior to moving to Desert Hot Springs. During his military service, he was a nuclear weapons assembler where he was responsible for general maintenance and testing of warheads.

Larry first heard about GRID through one of his neighbors who he had served on a committee with. He trusted her recommendation and gave GRID a call. When he first applied for GRID, funding was unavailable in his area. However, he was pleasantly surprised when he received a call from GRID at a later date informing him that he now qualified and was walked through the application process.

Thanks to GRID Alternatives’ Energy for All Program, homeowners energy bill is typically reduced up to 80%. “I am on a fixed income so this savings will help a lot,” said Larry.

Larry is a quick-witted active 75-year-old senior. He volunteers his time with the ARC Committee who is responsible for maintaining the properties in the residential development where he lives. He goes around his neighborhood helping pull weeds in his neighbors’ yards or assists with painting and other small jobs.

When asked how he stays in such great shape at his age, with a twinkle in his eye, he said, “I go dancing at least twice a week with my girlfriend who I met online.” Larry is widowed after being married for 12 years. He has one stepdaughter. Proudly displayed throughout his home, he shows off his handsome eagle and miniature ship collection, as well as stained glass artwork that he collects.

He is grateful to GRID for his new solar system. “I highly recommend GRID to everyone. I will tell my neighbors, you are crazy if you do not call,” said Larry.
