Maria Ocampo moved into her home in Jurupa Valley 12 years ago. Since then, Maria and her two children have worked diligently to transform her house into a home, planting fruit trees around the property and hanging hand-drawn pictures from her daughter around the house. Always seeking to improve her home, Maria first learned about GRID Alternatives through a local Energy Savings Assistance Program. She then spoke to a GRID outreach coordinator soon after receiving a free weatherization update and new energy efficient appliances. Initially, Maria was apprehensive about GRID because of her experiences with other companies that promised her free solar, but then learned that there were strings attached such as liens or other hidden costs.
After Maria’s initial conversation with GRID’s outreach coordinator, her wariness began to subside as she learned more about no-cost solar. Maria initially thought that GRID was just another for-profit solar company. She soon found out about the GRID difference and the benefits a no-cost solar system could provide her family. Her son Jovanny, a gardener, watched the system installation and commented that solar is one small part in the family’s mission to become more ecologically active. “This is amazing,” Jovanny said. “We want to help save the Earth for the next generation.” Both mother and son were surprised about the relative speed that GRID was able to move from application to installation. The process started in May and ended on July 13 when her system became operational.
Thanks to a generous donation from Sullivan Solar Power, eleven solar panels were installed, helping to ease the family’s reliance on traditional electric sources. When the project was complete, Maria came out of the house to see her new system. Covering her mouth with her hands, she exclaimed, “They’re awesome!” Maria says the panels will improve her home’s appearance while helping the family contribute to creating a greener environment by harnessing natural energy.
Maria expects to save 50-90% on her electricity bills each month and plans on investing her savings to help fund her daughter’s college education. Jovanny gave one final piece of advice to anyone who may be eligible for GRID’s program, “Call GRID and see if you qualify for their program,” he said. “It certainly worked for us, GRID can work for you too.”
GRID assists homeowners like Maria with savings of up to 90% on their energy bill through solar technology. To see if you qualify for GRID’s Solar Affordable Housing Program, call 951-465-2864, or visit www.gridsolar.org to complete an online application.
