Not Too Hot for Solar

At 8:30am on an unusually hot July San Diego day, it would seem that the thought of being on a roof would be daunting. Not so for the Kmoch family as they helped the staff and volunteers of GRID Alternatives install solar panels. Rather, the heat just served as a pleasant reminder that all these solar rays would be absorbed by the fourteen panels that were to be installed on their home!

The Kmoch family has owned and lived in their neighborhood since 1987. They enjoy the quiet, pleasant atmosphere of the community and love the idea of the neighborhood being taken over by solar panels. Avid recyclers and always thoughtful about the environment, Mr. Kmoch considered installing solar many years ago but the cost was out of reach. After learning about the program from his neighbor Carlos, Mr. Kmoch was eager to join the GRID community.

“Everyone [at GRID Alternatives] was so pleasant, so nice, no pressure at all,”he says, “I was very impressed.”

The Kmoch family becomes the fourth home in the in the neighborhood and they imagine one day when every roof in the neighborhood is covered with glimmering solar panels absorbing energy for all the families. They believe with programs like GRID Alternatives, this dream can one day be real.
