Born and raised in Madera, Alan Castillo learned about GRID through the job training organization, Proteus Inc. Eager to learn, Alan volunteered with his classmates during the summer of 2015. Prior to his enrollment in the job training program, Alan struggled to make ends meet as he applied for job after job while working in the fields.
However, after graduating from Proteus and the hands-on training attained through GRID; Alan received ten job offers within a week following the completion of the Photovoltaic Solar Design and Installation class. Alan states, “My volunteer experience with GRID Alternatives was great! I had the opportunity to learn about the different components of solar installation. I also appreciate that GRID emphasized the importance of safety on the site. Safety is really important and I apply what I’ve learned with GRID in the projects I’ve worked on”. Of the ten job offers, Alan chose to work with SolarCity. After gaining more experience at Solar City, Alan moved on and is now an Electrical Apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, where he desires to work his way up in the industry and aims to become a Journeyman Electrician for PG&E.
“I appreciate that GRID staff cared and taught me the ins and outs of solar installation. Thank you GRID for your support and providing me with the necessary skill building experience to help me get where I am today,” states Alan. On behalf of GRID Alternatives, keep reaching for the stars; we are proud of you and all your accomplishments.
