How can volunteerism impact your life? Whether it be installing solar panels on a family’s rooftop, working in a community garden, or helping out a family in need; volunteerism reaps many benefits. In particular, volunteerism provides the opportunity to gain valuable working skills while developing important social skills by interacting with volunteers from all walks of life. I recently interviewed a couple of our volunteers to learn about how they value volunteerism.
During a hot morning in Dinuba, and I mean extra hot, seven dedicated volunteers braved the heat to help the Del Rio family obtain solar on their rooftop. After hoisting a panel up with a teammate, Jorge Rivera stepped in the shade to discuss why he values volunteerism. “I enjoy helping out the community. This is a unique and awesome volunteer experience; not only am I helping a family but gaining the necessary skills to work in the industry,” stated Jorge. Jorge is currently a student at Reedley College and plans to enroll in the aerospace engineering program at San Jose State University. Jorge aspires to become a pilot and working on the roof provides him the opportunity to overcome his fear of heights.
Currently enrolled in the WestCare program, Ysidro Murillo was incarcerated for 10 years and is excited to start gaining the valuable skills in the lucrative field of solar. “Volunteering with GRID Alternatives is such a great opportunity. Not only are we helping a local family, but GRID is also helping people like me. I was in prison and glad they gave me the opportunity to come out and gain the skills that I need. I am very grateful for this opportunity to better my future,” Ysidro stated with excitement. When asked, how his volunteer experience has impacted his life; Ysidro replied, “Man I can go on forever. It is a blessing to be here. I know this training will help me get a job and is changing my life for the better.”
Altogether, volunteerism could lead you to a new job, meet a new friend, or make the connections you wouldn’t have otherwise made. So what are you waiting for?! Come out and volunteer with us today! Contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Nancy Andersen at 559-558-5933 to learn more.
