In February, GRID Alternatives Greater Los Angeles (GLA) organized a Solar Industry Job Fair in partnership with Los Angeles Trade Technical College. Over 600 job-seekers attended, resulting in over 90 job interviews. Like many of the Solar Job Fair’s participants, Alejandro De Leon sought a starting position in solar.
Alejandro first became interested in solar after learning about the environmental and health impacts from fossil fuel usage. He felt strongly that children in Los Angeles should not need to worry about wearing face masks while walking to school to prevent sickness from air pollution like in other parts of the world. Alejandro wanted to be a part of the solution for his local community; thus, he pursued a career in renewable energy.
Alejandro began studying solar at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. One of his professors encouraged him to gain hands-on experience by volunteering with GLA and continuing his solar education in the "classroom on the roof." After volunteering for several months with GLA and earning his Team Leader certification, Alejandro attended GLA’s Solar Job Fair. As a direct result of the Fair, Alejandro secured a canvassing position with Sunrun, a leading residential solar company based in California.
Alejandro brings his knowledge about solar from both construction and canvassing perspectives, strengthening his overall approach to his new solar career. Alejandro has excelled in the short time he has been with Sunrun. Booking appointments, educating homeowners about solar, and helping train some of his colleagues are all part of his role. Alejandro enjoys learning about the various facets of solar and hopes to grow his career in the industry. Keep up the great work Alejandro!
