It's International Women's Day! At GRID Alternatives, we're committed to ensuring that diverse women are visible in solar. That's a mission we cherish in Greater Los Angeles.
This Women's History Month, we feel excited that we played a central role bringing the community together for solar at the Downtown Women's Center's supportive housing on San Pedro Street.
GLA's Guadalupe Vazquez, Multifamily SolarCorps Construction Fellow, was one of the team members who led KPMG, Foley & Lardner, and Warner Bros. to lay modules on the DWC roof. Relatively new to solar, Lupe's gone from being a Homeboy trainee to a leader.
Lupe helps all kinds of individuals get their first experience on a worksite. "The install was a great weekend, because I saw up close and personal how some the ladies at the Center appreciated us," she says. "We had volunteers coming from partners [to install], and many are women who spend most days in office jobs. For them, getting hands-on with the construction for a nonprofit was lots of fun."
A year ago, Lupe thought she wanted to be a nurse. But thanks to one-of-a-kind training opportunities and her own persistence, now she's an inspiration to all of us who admire talented women in construction!
Strong solar industry women in L.A.: We honor your leadership & talent!
