Women in Solar Light Up the Inland Empire

For several GRID IE volunteers the home of Beatrice Jones held special significance. Michelle Eisenberg, Sheri Edwards and Deanna Jackson who all work at Wells Fargo participated in a Habitat for Humanity women’s building event on the house in Riverside, California which occurred in 2013. When the home was completed, Michelle remembered meeting the homeowner, Ms. Jones and talking about the project. Neither Michelle nor Beatrice thought they would meet again on another volunteer project on Ms. Jones’ home.

Their paths did cross again, a result of Ms. Jones interest in solar energy. “I had always wondered about solar and if it was right for me,” she said. “Habitat put me in touch with GRID Alternatives and I began receiving their newsletters.” Several months later Jones met with GRID’s outreach team and began the application process. “I met twice with GRID, they went over all my questions and then my solar system was approved.”

Unbeknownst to Ms. Jones, Wells Fargo was also working with GRID Alternatives. The Wells Fargo Foundation has sponsored GRID events for several years with projects ranging from Tribal installations, Solarthons and the Women in Solar initiative that brought eight Wells Fargo women to the home of Beatrice Jones.

“I am so happy to come back and finish the job at Beatrice’s house,” remarked Michelle Eisenberg who works in Wells Fargo’s Learning and Development team. “I have volunteered for GRID on other occasions including a project in Jurupa Valley. It was a surprise to show up at Beatrice’s again and see my work. I can remember painting the eaves. It is so nice to realize my efforts have made a difference.”

Wells Fargo Foundation sponsored GRID’s Women in Solar event with a $15,000 grant as part of their community development program. “An investment in renewable energy through GRID aligns perfectly with our vision of promoting greener buildings,” said Eisenberg. The contribution reflects a commitment to both supporting women in an industry that is growing at over 20 percent per year and an investment in clean, renewable energy.
