Often referred to as “Charm City”, Baltimore is the site of GRID Alternatives’ next set of solar installations, where we hope to sprinkle a little of our charm. Through support from the Abell Foundation and partnering with the City of Baltimore Office of Sustainability and Civic Works, we will launch in Baltimore this June, bringing solar power to ten homes in the CARE Community.
The Office of Sustainability in Baltimore has offered a variety of energy efficiency assistance programs to low-income residents through programs such as Baltimore Clean Energy Challenge. GRID Alternatives appreciates the City’s emphasis on energy efficiency and can now assist low-income residents climb the energy ladder by participating in solar energy and reaping the benefits through reduced electricity costs and contributing to a cleaner environment. In addition, Baltimore Office of Sustainability and the Baltimore Energy Challenge are providing cool roofs to the ten homeowners through the Baltimore Energy Initiative.
The ten projects will take place in the C.A.R.E. community, which stands for caring active restoring efforts. The community is focused on revitalization by bringing in more residents and investors into the community. Additionally, the Door Center, which is owned by the Baltimore Urban Leadership Foundation, has been identified as a critical facility, which will receive a solar electric installation and a battery back-up system. The Door’s mission is to facilitate the transformation and holistic growth of youth, families and communities through collaborative partnerships, direct services, capacity-building, and resource development.
Civic Works is a job training organization and along with GRID Alternatives’ solar installation supervisors, job trainees will receive hands-on training to provide homeowners with cool roofs and solar panels. Homeowners can expect great savings from these services.
Through this launch, GRID Alternatives will lay the groundwork for solar installations to achieve scalable efforts citywide in years to come.
We invite sponsors to host a project or a workday. Contact us if you’d like to contribute to our efforts in Charm City! Space is limited.
