GRID Successfully Launches IBT-200 Pilot Class

Last month we completed the pilot class of our IBT-200 (Installation Basics Training) program! This program is GRID Alternatives' premiere job-training program for solar installation. GRID's robust IBT-200 program developed from a self-selected IBT program opportunity that allowed individuals to check solar installation skills off for certificates of completion at their own pace. Thanks to a national partnership with Accenture, a global consulting firm, GRID was able to create a more in-depth comprehensive training program through a 5-week, 200-hour internship model.

Our pilot group of IBT-200 trainees gained a lot of hands-on experience through GRID’s Technical Academy. Trainees were able to get on mock roofs, practice conduit bending, use power tools to cut racking, and so much more. Each person who participates in GRID’s training program has such a unique story to tell; our trainees come from a variety of backgrounds. Trainee Yolanda was incarcerated for 7 years at Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla. She learned about GRID after being released, as she was looking to take the next steps in her career.

Yolanda stated, “I seen a flyer that showed women installing solar on the roof, and I said that was going to be me one day. I met Tommy who did a presentation on GRID and I said this is what I want to do and that's how I ended up with GRID. Now I’m going to pursue a career with solar.” Yolanda knew she wanted to learn the necessary skills she would need to pursue a career in solar and persevered through the program to obtain her goal.

At the end of the 5 weeks, we celebrated the trainees’ graduation in our office along with their family and friends. We are proud of this group for successfully completing the first IBT 200 program!  We are happy to be part of their journeys, and we’re looking forward to seeing them take their next steps and putting their new found skills to great use. Your support can help us provide skills, training and career readiness for future cohorts through our 2019 IBT-200 Program!
