A recent report from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory finds that pairing solar PV with rooftops of low- and moderate-income housing represents an opportunity to help modernize the U.S. electric grid and improve energy affordability. GRID Alternatives provided consultation to NREL on the project, providing real-world context to ensure that the technical potential assessment would be relevant to both solar providers and policymakers.

Utilizing funds made available through legislation authored by Senator de Leon, SB 535, the Figueroa family of East Los Angeles is powering their home with solar energy installed by GRID Alternatives. Now, California's "Charge Ahead" program has allowed the Figueroas to replace their vehicle with a plug-in hybrid and install an electric-vehicle charging station on their property. 

GRID Alternatives celebrates the installation of its 10,000th solar electric system this week. The 42 MW of clean power represent a distributed generation power plant that is saving families over $300 million in lifetime energy costs and preventing 850,000 tons of carbon emissions.

Illinois took a step last week toward shifting its portfolio to cleaner energy sources when state regulators signed off on the first long-term renewable energy procurement under the 2016 Future Energy Jobs Act. Vote Solar and GRID Alternatives, were involved in proceedings before the ICC, and developed a policy guide to help with the rollout of low-income programs.

Fort Lewis College students dedicate their Spring Break to installing a solar system for the Ojo Encino Chapter House on the Navajo Nation as part of GRID Alternatives' Solar Spring Break Program.

Taking advantage of a state program for low-income households, the Chemehuevi tribe partnered with nonprofit GRID Alternatives to put solar power on 80 homes on the reservation, train 20 tribal members in solar installation, and install a solar-microgrid, leading the way in tribal community resiliency.
