Casa de Luz: A Solar-Powered Beacon for LGBTQ+ Refugees

In October 2023, GRID's team in Mexico and renewable energy students installed solar on Casa de Luz to reduce their monthly electric bill.

Casa de Luz is a collective house offering shelter, safety, and support to LGBTQ+ refugees fleeing discrimination. As one of the most vulnerable refugee groups entering the United States, LGBTQ+ individuals often face the dual challenges of lacking police protection and family assistance. Casa de Luz steps in to bridge these gaps, providing essential services including housing, meals, medical care, and emotional support.

The organization also runs workshops for asylum seekers, addressing critical topics such as application readiness, STD prevention, health and nutrition, and recovery from violence and abuse. Beyond direct services, Casa de Luz actively advocates for the human rights of refugees and calls for improved immigration policies to protect this vulnerable community.

Casa de Luz in San Diego (Casa de Luz SD) works in close partnership with its sister organization in Tijuana, Mexico. The Tijuana location was founded by Irving Mondragón, a renowned advocate for LGBTQ+ migrants from Central America. Irving has a rich background in arts and documentary film studies and played a pivotal role in organizing the Rainbow 17, the first caravan of trans and gay migrants from Central America. His leadership continues to inspire Casa de Luz’s mission of safety and empowerment for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers.

In October 2023, GRID Alternatives partnered with Flex Foundation to install a 12kW solar system at Casa de Luz in Tijuana. This system is expected to generate monthly savings of at least $180, which will enable the organization to install a much-needed ventilation system and air conditioning units to comply with city regulations.

This project is part of GRID’s commitment to workforce development. Renewable energy students from UTT completed the solar installation as part of their hands-on training. This initiative not only serves the community but also equips students with practical skills for entering the growing renewable energy sector, fostering a clean energy future for Mexico and beyond.

Casa de Luz’s mission goes beyond immediate refuge, addressing the long-term needs of LGBTQ+ refugees and migrants. The addition of solar energy amplifies their ability to provide essential services sustainably while also supporting local students in gaining valuable industry experience. Together, GRID Alternatives and Flex Foundation are building a brighter, more equitable future for vulnerable communities at Casa de Luz Tijuana.
