Frequently Asked Questions

What's the Catch?

There is no catch, no tricks, GRID Alternatives is the only nonprofit that provides solar for low-income homeowners living in the city of San Bernardino - all at no cost to our clients. There is no hidden fees. We don't put a lien on your property. We don't charge you through your property taxes. You don't even need to have high electric bills.

How is GRID Different?

Where do you get your money to offer this program?

GRID Alternatives understands that without continued financial support through a variety of funding options, low-income families will continue to be left out of the solar market. Despite lower costs on equipment pricing and the rise of lease/PPA financing models in recent years, there is still a need to leverage a variety of funds so that we can make our programs work and continue to keep solar affordable to families in need. Together with the use of local incentives, state rebates, tax incentives, equipment donations and discounts----and a volunteer and job training force, we can leverage all these resources to provide the most cost effective and affordable solar electric systems to our families. Used alone, these funding streams can only cover a small portion of our program costs. But together, they offset the majority of the costs keeping solar affordable and GRID sustainable as a mission driven organization.
