You know? Sometimes a vacation offers the chance to take advantage of unique opportunities and some fun in the sun. If you are from Albuquerque, New Mexico a chance for some fun in the sun might not sound too inviting…..but if you are interested in solar installation…..why not drive to Porterville or Turlock, California to do just that? GRID Alternatives’ Central Valley office had the opportunity to host Jerry Carmody who took vacation time with his family to visit California’s national parks, camp, and install a little solar at the same time. Jerry first heard about GRID Alternatives through Solar Energy International and the opportunity to gain hands-on solar installation experience using GRID’s “classroom on the roof” model of learning. As a professional engineer, Jerry has a big interest in renewable energy and after numerous attempts to volunteer at other GRID offices elsewhere and not finding a time frame to fit his schedule, he decided to give GRID Central Valley a try.
Jerry has been working on gaining solar installation experience after working in the semiconductor industry. He is interested in learning installation processes and more about the industry that includes installing off-grid systems as well. When asked about his experience after completing two installations with GRID Central Valley construction supervisors Jerry commented that, “despite the 90 degree plus weather, the training he received was great. GRID staff took time to teach and engage each volunteer and were more than happy to answer any questions or provide clarification”. Jerry plans to volunteer on future installations with GRID Alternatives, perhaps a little closer to home, like hmmmmm…Colorado, or perhaps come back to work in the Central Valley on his next vacation for more fun. Regardless of where he lands, we thank him for his time, dedication, and willingness to help bring the benefits of solar to families we serve in Central California.
