GRID Alternatives North Valley is thrilled to partner with Mutual Housing California to provide solar services for Sacramento’s first LGBTQ-friendly affordable senior housing development, Lavender Courtyard.
Lavender Courtyard by Mutual Housing will be a unique affordable housing retirement community for the LGBTQ senior populations who struggle with finding affordable and nondiscriminatory living situations. A portion of the units will also be reserved for anyone transitioning from homelessness. It is the first of its kind to focus on the health, rights, safety, and housing issues that the 62 and older population face.
According to Mutual Housing, studies have shown that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer seniors experience discrimination in health and social service delivery and in housing. LGBTQ seniors frequently report being victimized by staff and residents of senior facilities. Upon moving into traditional senior communities, many LGBTQ elders feel compelled to go back into the closet after years or decades of being able to live out and proud.
We are delighted to once again collaborate with Mutual Housing California after having worked with them on their Spring Lake Phase II and Victory Trio developments. At GRID, our mission is to make renewable energy technology accessible to underserved communities and we appreciate affordable housing developers who work to provide housing for the same communities because safe, affordable housing is a right, not a privilege.
