The GRID Nicaragua team will be installing a solar system on a family-owned beekeeping business.

In the vibrant community of Managua, Nicaragua, Miel biibii, Zeas Apícola & Cia. Ltda., a family-run beekeeping business, has been a cornerstone of economic empowerment and sustainability. Aurora Zeas and her two siblings founded the business with just five hives in 2004, gradually growing into a well-regarded enterprise that produces and markets high-quality honey under the brand "biibii." Today, their vision extends beyond honey production to fostering local economic growth, especially for women, through job creation and business mentorship.

In 2025, GRID Alternatives will install a grid-tied solar system for Miel biibii with an estimated capacity of 13.11 kW, consisting of 46 solar modules and two 10 kW inverters. This system aims to cover 50% of the business's energy needs, dramatically reducing its reliance on the national grid and lowering monthly energy costs. Key partners, including United Airlines, make the installation possible.

The project directly benefits approximately 15 individuals and indirectly supports nearly 80 people. With an average monthly electricity consumption of 375 kWh, the switch to solar will result in significant savings, enhancing the company's financial stability and production capacity. The reduced energy expenses—estimated to save $100 per month—will be reinvested in expanding production, upgrading equipment, and improving product quality, particularly for their growing export market.

Beyond financial savings, the solar system aligns with Miel biibii's commitment to sustainability. Solar energy will prevent the release of substantial carbon emissions, contributing to global efforts against climate change. Moreover, the company plans to use part of its savings to empower women in the community by creating job opportunities and providing training in beekeeping and business skills.
