In June 2023, GRID’s team in Mexico, together with renewable energy students from Universidad Autonoma de Baja California, Campus Valle de las Palmas, installed a 10.56 kW grid-tied system at Asilo del Hermano Pablo in the community of La Rumorosa, BC, Mexico.
Asilo del Hermano Pablo is a geriatric center funded in 1999 by el Hermano Pablo, a secular missionary of the Secular Franciscan Order. The center shelters approximately 35 individuals experiencing homelessness and/or neglect, providing them with needed medical attention and 3 meals per day. Clients include deportees, people with different disabilities, and those in rehabilitation for substance abuse.
The shelter had an unfinished 10.56 kW system for over three years because electrical wiring wasn’t up to code. The GRID team and renewable energy students relocated the solar modules with proper racking and new wire and re-installed the whole solar system with new wire, conduit, switches, AC outlets, etc… so the solar system would be running and up to code.
The solar system will provide the Hermano Pablo shelter clean, reliable electricity and lower its electric bill significantly, allowing the shelter to be able to provide services to a greater number of people.
Thanks to the Sempra Foundation for making this project possible.
