Casa Hogar Paloma (formerly “Casa Hogar Uriel,”) is an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico that is home to 35 children. Electricity is the fourth-largest expense after staff, school/classes, and food for the children since running a home for 35+ residents means they use lights and electrical appliances frequently. In September 2023, GRID Alternatives team in Mexico and renewable energy students from the Universidad Tecnológica de Tijuana, and CETYS Universidad Tijuana installed a 13kW grid-tied solar system at the orphanage.
The cost savings from the solar are intended to be used to reinvest back into the home and to increase the number of children served to 50, from 35 by the end of next year. The savings will allow the orphanage to increase its food budget, staff, procure more healthcare services, and cover upcoming educational and daily operational expenses. The new building will be more efficient and increase the capacity of children that Casa Hogar Paloma serves.
