In October 2023, GRID's team in Mexico and renewable energy students installed solar on Casa de Luz to reduce their monthly electric bill.

Casa de Luz is a collective house that offers shelter and a safe environment for LGBTQ+ refugees seeking to escape persecution and start a new life in the US. These refugees are among the most vulnerable, often lacking police protection and family assistance.

Casa de Luz provides housing, meals, emotional support, medical care, and other essential needs for the LGBTQ+ refugees. The organization also has a network of pro bono immigration lawyers who help with the asylum process. Casa de Luz conducts workshops covering various topics including application readiness, STD prevention, health and nutrition, and recovery from violence and abuse. Furthermore, Casa de Luz advocates for the human rights of refugees and strives for improved immigration policies.

As part of GRID’s local workforce development initiative, the installation of the 12kW solar system was carried out by renewable energy students from Universidad Tecnológica de Tijuana (UTT). This experience will provide students with the opportunity to serve their communities, gain hands-on experience with solar technology, and acquire skills to enter the renewable energy industry. Ultimately, they will contribute to creating a clean energy future for the country.

The installation of the 12kW solar system at Casa de Luz is expected to save at least $180 per month. These savings will allow Casa de Luz to install a much-needed ventilation system and two air conditioners to comply with city regulations.
