Job Training

Attending a world-renowned research university, UCLA, has pushed Nicole Vences to continue to challenge herself. Post graduation she followed her passion of working in the educational realm. As an AVID tutor and afterschool instructor Nicole learned the work needed to mold and motivate young minds. Although she loved working with children, she felt that there is little room for growth without a master’s degree in education. Not ready to commit to a huge educational and financial commitment, Nicole decided it was time to explore other interests such as the nonprofit sector.

Solar Works DC is a solar installation and job training program led by GRID Alternatives Mid-Atlantic, in Washington, DC. The program provides no cost solar to low-income communities and offers community members the solar installation training and hands on experience needed to pursue careers in the industry. Devonta Sanders was a participant in the first Solar Works DC cohort and now works as a Construction Fellow for GRID Alternatives. Hear him reflect on his journey into the solar industry.

Taylor R., a freshman at Prairie View A&M University, joined GRID NV this summer to learn more about solar from local rooftops. He shared about his experience with GRID staff:

“I am here volunteering and installing solar panels (with GRID). I’ve enjoyed the construction aspect of it. I don’t know if other people like learning how to put stuff together, but I like it. The GRID staff have walked me through everything and taught me a lot. You really learn something (at GRID) that you can benefit from and help others at the same time.”
