In March 2023, international travelers visited the remote community of San Jose El Paraiso, Nicaragua to install off-grid solar home systems for 15 families living without electricity. Solar power will allow the families to have lights and electric power to run small appliances 24 hours a day.
San Jose El Paraiso is a small rural community located in the department of Matagalpa in Nicaragua. It is located far from the national electric grid and has the opportunity to benefit greatly from having access to reliable electricity. With solar power, residents hope to charge cell phones, watch news and entertainment, offer products and services they cannot currently offer, and have lights in their home to see and study at night.
GRID and travelers installed 15 small solar systems totaling 4.5kW over the course of 4 days in the community. During their other days in Nicaragua, the group participated in social and cultural activities and visited other parts of the country.
