Multifamily Solar

On Saturday, WGL volunteers joined GRID Alternatives in Southeast DC to install solar for our first multifamily project in the Mid-Atlantic. The WGL volunteers were participating as part of the annual “WGL Day of Weatherization,” which involved 215 WGL employees weatherizing 105 homes in West Virginia, Maryland, DC, and Virginia.

GRID Alternatives today announced an expansion of its multifamily solar program to include free technical assistance nationally for affordable housing owners, developers, and operators. The program also offers turnkey solar PV design/installation for multifamily affordable housing in several states. The technical assistance service, launched to coincide with the Housing California conference in Sacramento, is funded by a grant from The JPB Foundation.

GRID Alternatives is a nonprofit solar installer driven by our mission to build community-powered solutions to advance economic and environmental justice through renewable energy. Our innovative community engagement model integrates job training and tenant engagement into every aspect of our work, assuring every project meets our triple bottom line: people, planet, employment.

Installing solar with GRID can reduce your organization’s operating costs and reduce electric bills for your tenants. We make solar easy for you.
From the rooftop of a formerly condemned home in Camden, NJ, one of the nation's most economically disadvantaged communities, you won't see much solar. But that's about to change thanks to a new partnership with NeighborWorks America, a national nonprofit that creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives, and strengthen their comnunities.
On a chilly November morning in 2014, GRID completed its first multi-family installation in Fresno, California at the Viking Village Apartments. As one of the volunteers on this project, Cynthia Mancillas discovered her passion for solar installation. “It was a great feeling knowing my family and the rest of community would benefit from the install.
Last month, GRID Alternatives joined representatives of housing organizations, foundations, finance companies and solar companies from around the country for a White House summit on solar for multifamily affordable housing. Solar has a lot of benefits for housing authorities and other affordable housing owners, and as part of his 2013 Climate Action Plan, President Obama called for 100 MW of solar on Federally-assisted housing.
