Learn How to Qualify for Free Solar with GRID CO

Solar power is a renewable energy technology that is changing the way we think about powering our homes, businesses, and communities. At GRID Alternatives, we are thrilled to announce that we are partnering with Adams County, Arapahoe County, and the City of Thornton to bring free solar systems to income-qualified homeowners who live in these areas.

Who Qualifies for Free Solar?

If you meet our qualification criteria, we will install a solar PV system on your home free of charge. YOU will be the owner of this solar system; there are no liens or loans—or any out-of-pocket costs, for that matter—associated with the installation. All solar costs are covered by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) programs.

In order to qualify for our program, here’s what we need to see:

  • You must own your home.

  • You must meet income eligibility requirements established by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This requirement is based on the total number of people living in your home and your gross income. If your income is greater than 80 percent of the area median income (AMI), you will not qualify. You can view the AMI guidelines here.

  • You must have a qualifying roof—our construction crew will schedule a site inspection in advance to check things like shingles, shading, size, structural integrity, and more.

What’s So Hot About Solar Energy?

Installing free solar on your home is a big win for you and for the environment. With GRID’s solar panel installation, you can save between 50-90 percent on your annual energy bill. Solar energy is produced with zero carbon emissions, too, which means that by installing solar, you’re helping to combat climate change. Because you will own the panels that we install (these are yours for life!), your home may also gain value or be more attractive to future buyers should you choose to sell.
